Inspired by some Zebra and Tiger printed napkins, found in the Wilkinson Rhodes warehouse, I decided to throw a safari/jungle themed birthday party for my nephew, Levi, who was turning 4 years old. I found many examples of watermelon alligators but none with specific instructions so in an effort to change that, I made one myself, with the hope that I would be successful and could create a how-to for other folks. I think I was fairly successful.
The alligator above was a bit of a rush job as I did it the morning of the party. It took about 30 minutes.
Here's how I did it:
(I am going to take pictures of the process next time I do this and add to this blog to make it easier to understand and follow. Its a work in progress).
I hope this helps! Leave comments if you have any questions!
Thanks!
The alligator above was a bit of a rush job as I did it the morning of the party. It took about 30 minutes.
Here's how I did it:
- You will need a long watermelon to start.
- With a large knife, you will cut two lines about 2 inches apart at about 2/3 of the way down the length of the watermelon and then the second line about 2 inches farther. You want to make the cut only half way through the height of the watermelon.
- Next you will cut length-wise from one end of the watermelon to the line closest to that end, and then do the same on the other side to meet the cuts you already made. This will leave a two inch strip of watermelon after you remove the two cuts.
- Take a melon baller and spoon out the watermelon and into a separate bowl, leaving only the two inch strip.
- Spoon the watermelon out of the two cuts as well.
- To cut the teeth, you just cut jagged edges along the sides of the watermelon, and then the longer of the two cuts, cut jagged edge along the rounded part, not the straight bit where you made the original cut.
- For the eyes, tail, and feet, you will need to cut carefully, the shorter cut. Be wise with you leftovers. cut an m looking shape for the eyes, a jagged triangle for the tail, and rectangles with 5 jagged edge for the toes/claws. attach to body with toothpicks. I used kitchen scissors to cut the eyes, it was easier to round the edges. Use two watermelon balls for the pupils.
- Take balled melon and add to the back to serve.
